Ke‘anae Lowlands
Oceanside Coconut Production & Harvesting Farm
GENERATIONAL FARMING IN HAWAI’I
Ocean side on the peninsula of Ke’anae, in the District of Ko’olau is our family land, full of Coconut Trees from boundary to boundary. Our family has cultivated, harvested, planted, and propagated coconuts for nearly four generations. Creating products like Coconut Candy, Fresh Coconut meat, Coconut Milk, Coconut Fibers, Coconut Composting materials, and so much more.
Coconuts have been feeding our community, island residents, and visitors, as we harvest these nutritional nuts to its full capacity. Coconuts are rich in fibre, vitamin C, Vitamin E, and so many other nutritional values & vitamins.
Coconut Water has been at high demand in Hawaii, specifically in ocean-side or seaside communities. Our farm has been able to harvest over 3000 coconuts for fresh water use this year alone. Coconut water has great taste, full of hydrating components, and can be processed for exporting to our main central Maui stores and pick up locations.
Coconut information should be shared with the world, specifically our Pacific island communities. Our farm has the potential to be an educational farm inviting the community or visitors to learn about the tools, and techniques needed to harvest, and cook with coconuts properly. Empowering our children to understand all components and life cycles of the coconut can create a foundation to greater agriculture inspirations.
Other than coconuts, our seashore farm has been able to produce potted Kalo plants, given away to our community, friends, family, and residents, a gift of food security. One potted kalo has the potential to create 3-5 huli (kalo stalks) that can be replanted again and again. Within three years of proper care of huli, that same potted Kalo would have made about 20-30 huli, eventually creating enough to plant an entire kalo patch.
GROWING GOALS January 2022 - Kalo plants, Mamaki tea, Hawaiian chili pepper, Hawaiian turmeric, ‘Uala, ‘Ulu, more Hawaiian Coconuts, and other medicinal plants is our reaching goal these next years as we strive to expand our agriculture endeavors on our oceanside farm.
